Who are we?
Science Learning Centre London is part of the national network of Science Learning Centres, a joint initiative by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Wellcome Trust. We opened in October 2004 and for the past three years have delivered thousands of training days to science teachers and technicians at all key stages and in all subject areas. We are a partnership of four organisations, creating a strong blend of resources and capabilities. The Institute of Education, University of London, hosts the main venue, drawing on the scientific expertise of Birkbeck, University College London, and the collections, multimedia resources and informal educational expertise of the Science Museum. We aim to enthuse teachers and technicians and so introduce more active and interesting science lessons into our schools and colleges.
Courses
Research clearly shows that making a difference in classroom practice does not happen in single instances of professional development, such as the one-off INSET day. However, we recognise that it is not easy for teachers or technicians to be released for professional development; issues with cost and the availability of good supply cover are particular barriers in the London area.

For this reason we promote a variety of course models, from single-day workshops to 1.5-day, two-day and longer courses. Days of longer courses are normally separated; participants return for review and development of their classroom experiences carried out during mid-course tasks. These longer courses are aimed at promoting reflective changes in practice, supported by online discussion and mentoring.
"The range of materials and the delivery of the session was superb."
"It was fantastic to have a course where people felt comfortable to voice their own opinions and question their understanding."
"Gave me plenty of ideas to take back to my department and gave me the confidence to demonstrate them."

Primary Outreach Programme
Increasingly we are receiving enquiries about delivering our courses in school. We are now able to offer a selection of professional development sessions which can be delivered in your own school or to a cluster of schools in your area.
